Love This! Starting A Business in Jamaica

In the mid-90’s, I had a small fashion accessory business called Finishing Touch. I remember coming up with a great idea to produce a line of resort wear for the Jamaican tourist market, and I forged ahead to create the prototype product.

After making my first few samples, it dawned on me that I knew absolutely nothing about marketing stuff to the tourist market.

As a young (and very green) entrepreneur I didn’t know where to turn for advice on how to proceed with my idea. I vividly recall wishing that  I could find one place or resource that could guide me.

Back then, we didn’t have the Jamaica Business Development Corporation that could help business newbies, and at that time JAMPRO was more focused on assisting big exporters.

Despite all the support organisations that exist in Jamaica today, the process of getting started in a business can seem very daunting  for a rookie.

There is so much to learn in such a short time; and in business, what you don’t know can hurt you.

Congrats to Kimala Bennett of the The Business Lab for taking the time and effort to create a comprehensive manual called Starting a Business in Jamaica. It gives you a step-by-step process of all the things you need to do to start your business on the right foot. It points you to the places you need to go, the documents you need to submit and the licences you need to have.

Love this! I’m definitely going to use this handy guide to help me get started in my newest business venture.
